The bleeding hearts felt bad for the young girl/woman who had a child with no father in the home, and no one to help pay for food and rent.”
My mother was widowed in 1938 with a 2 year old and a 5 year old——she went without, took typing and shorthand at a local high school, and worked hard for the next 40 years.
They were different times.
.
Yes—different times indeed.
My father worked as a bus driver all his life—drove from Beaumont to Galveston (TX) and back every day except Wednesday, which was his day off.
There was a morning run, and an afternoon run. In order for Dad to get his one day off a week, he had to pull a double (make two runs on Tuesday, so the other driver could have his one day off.)
For many years, Greyhound tried to unionize the small company my dad worked for.
That many years back (40’s and 50’s) my dad refused to join a union. If he had done so, he would have made more money, and have some paid time off-—but he was so opposed to unions, that he wouldn’t even consider joining one.
As a family of 5, we made it just fine with what we had, and it taught my 2 brothers and I something about having principles and sticking to them.
