I wanted to grow up to be Doris Day. I first encountered her on the radio when she sang with the Bob Crosby orchestra (Bing’s brother)on Saturday nights. She debuted in the movies later, and we found out that she was as pretty as she sounded. And always played wholesome roles.
I didn’t know Bing had any siblings that made it big in music besides himself. That must have been a pretty deep shadow of fame to grow up in. It was only back in the 1990s, when I went through a big band listening phase, that I learned how good and soulful a singer Doris was. She could do jazz and blues with both subtlety and flair when flair was called for. I think her only grandson refuses to talk about her. He is probably tired of all the ‘old people’ asking him about his Grandma.
