The captain of U-505, Kptlt Peter Zschech, committed suicide while under a heavy depth charge attack on 24 Oct. This was the only such case in the war. The IWO, Meyer, saved the boat and brought it back to port.

U-505 was captured by the US Navy in June 1944 and is now on exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

U-505 is a must-see. It is crowded during a tour. It would be miserable with a full crew and load of provisions.

Rollicking good story about how it was captured, too.
