HS Football Player Suspended For Writing Class Poem About Coach's Son
Deadspin ^ | October 23, 2013

The Rittman (Ohio) Indians aren't having a good year. They're 1-7. So when junior DE Nick Andre had to write a poem for his composition class, he chose as a subject the team's star wide receiver, who happens to be the son of the coach and brother of the offensive coordinator.

The assignment was to write about something that makes you angry. Andre's poem, entitled "Stupid," accuses senior WR Blake Dennis of not being particularly good, but getting all the plays because of nepotism and his friendship with the quarterback. Dennis has committed to Akron next year (his father's alma mater), and Andre's poem ends: "Akron's Screwed!"

Andre read the poem in class on Friday. On Monday, he and his mother were called in to meet with the principal, who gave them a letter accusing Andre of "hazing" and "harassment." He would be kicked off the football team for the rest of the season, and suspended from school for four days.

"I felt like it was my right to express what I just felt," Andre told Fox 8. His mother has refused to sign the suspension letter.

...but I can’t find his name in the football recruiting lists.

And you would have access to football recruiting lists how?

Are you implying that you are a professional scout with the inside scoop on who is and isn't being recruited?

I never said the kid did not earn it, but I have had my fill of experiences with coaches that have their kids on the team, invariably it’s for the advancement of their kid first and the team second.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that it was NOT a love poem. And that the subject of the poem is the same age as the poet.

Just typical small town school politics.

Yay. Maybe.

A wordsmith he ain’t, but he’s “speaking truth to power” and his is a true witness, then he deserves an A+ for effort.

“And you would have access to football recruiting lists how?”

Seriously? They’re all over the internet.

“Are you implying that you are a professional scout with the inside scoop on who is and isn’t being recruited? “

No. I’m implying that SamAdams needs to get out and explore the net a little and keep up with the real world.

You can begin with espn recruiting lists, crank it up a notch and go to Rivals.com and if you are really feeling like dark ale, you can hit the individual state rankings, where you will find the aforementioned player Dennis is in the top 100-200 players in Ohio.

It should be graded as if he’d written on any other topic. Did he complete the assignment as given? How does his effort compare to others in the class? (Maybe he’d get a better grade if he had used rhyme or meter.)
