Cemetery withdraws approval for SpongeBob gravestones

A cemetery's decision to withdraw its approval for a pair of SpongeBob SquarePants headstones has sparked a controversy in Cincinnati.

Sgt. Kimberly Walker was killed this past Valentine's Day. Her boyfriend, Sgt. Montrell Mayo, was charged with her murder.

Walker was apparently a passionate fan of SpongeBob SquarePants. Her mother, Deborah Walker, told WLWT that they placed the Nickelodeon cartoon character in Kimberly's casket.

Seeking to honor Kimberly further, the family had two 6-foot-tall SpongeBob SquarePants headstones erected. The first, dressed in an Army uniform, would be for Kimberly. The second, dressed in Navy attire, would be for her twin sister, Kara, who currently serves as an IT specialist. Each gravestone cost $13,000 and weighs 7,000 pounds.

Geez, mom - my favorite Robert Crumb characters are Flakey Foont, Mr. Natural, and Angelfood McSpade, but on a 6 foot tall gravestone?

You've gotta visit a graveyard in Barre, Vermont on Route 14 north. Hope Cemetery.

Stone workers from Italy and elsewhere doing "one-upmanship" on their, and their families' gravestones.

Search for it and you'll find some images online.

There's a huge granite soccer ball, a biplane, a Nascar car, life size people all kinds of incredible sculpture.

Huh!

We cremate. No funerals. No burials. Then the ashes are toted to the nearest beach and we return our loved one to the earth.

We cremate in our family too. Purely the result of a mass revulsion at the thought of being buried in the earth. (We ALL have that heeby-jeeby. Probably from watching too many one-star movies.) I will confess though that my mom’s ashes are still sitting in their original cardboard box.

From the article it’s not clear if the headstone was originally approved by the cemetary or not. But if it is allowed to stay then I see a run on weird headstones and one upmanship, with the result of a whacky and unholy cemetary that is a laughing stock. BTW: this is a black family. Are whacky headstones a new urban craze?

at 13k a pop, i can see why the family is upset, but they should have checked first. frankly if they prevail then we’ll see a whole raft of people trying to show off when they should be respecting the deceased. showing love for someone shouldn’t be trying to out-spectacle others.
