Word For The Day, Wednesday, October 16, 2013-- assize
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
assize [uh-sahyz]
noun
1. Usually, assizes. a trial session, civil or criminal, held periodically in specific locations in England, usually by a judge of a superior court.
2. an edict, ordinance, or enactment made at a session of a legislative assembly.
3. an inquest before members of a jury or assessors; a judicial inquiry.
4. an action, writ, or verdict of an assize.
5. judgment: the last assize; the great assize.
Origin: 12501300; Middle English asise < Old French: a sitting, noun use of feminine of asis seated at (past participle of aseeir ), equivalent to a- a-5 + -sis < Latin sēssum ( sed- stem of sedēre to sit + -tus past participle suffix)
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
Yeah, I figured that was fruit on the too low branch.
A++
With each passing day, Obamacare shows that it is the gift that keeps on giving, to a republican party that doesn’t know what to do with said gift.
Actually, I’m surprised that Michelle is getting all the attention. I figured that Hillary would be good for at least 50%. (Just my half-assed estimate.)
Ah, she of the cottage cheese look.
And I just apparently murdered the thread and all readers with the visual they got from that comment.
Oops.
Better a comment than a picture.
Jonah Goldberg talks about William F. Buckley’s use of big and unfamiliar words here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3079589/posts
LOL!
True.
Especially her Thighness these days.
The best line I saw (on Twitter) was that people should be offended by “Washington Redskins” because it contains the word “Washington.”
I think it’s amusing and telling when mothers and daughters have the same hairstyle.
Pray that the Fabric Shortage isn’t rectified anytime soon.....
"Noon, who is not in a cult, also told local news...."
Words are magical things, routinely defying the sort of logic-chopping on display in Costas' tirade. Their euphony can be a siren calling us to dangerous shores. Logophillic pundit William Safire, an unreconstructed paronomasiac, could be so seduced by clever puns, he often crashed whole columns into them. My former boss, William F. Buckley, was often in the dock on charges of aggravated sesquipedalianism, to which he always pleaded nolo contendere, informing the court of public opinion: "I am Lapidary But Not Eristic When I Use Big Words."
hat desrvesa post of its own. When you do, tag it with WI and I’ll ping the WI list. Only in Madison!
Hillary can’t run for orifice due to her assize.
What is it with madison? It’s like Uppermidwest Bezerkley!
I LOVE that !!!
Or, when you see mothers dressing vicariously thru their daughters.
I see that all the time.
