Canadian man fends off attacking bear by grabbing its tongue

GRAND FALLS, New Brunswick, - A Canadian man says he successfully fended off an attacking black bear by grabbing its tongue.

Gilles Cyr says he was walking through his wooded property near Grand Falls, New Brunswick, two weeks ago when the bruin burst out of the woods and assailed him, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday.

"When I opened up my eyes it was on top of me -- with the friggin' noise, it's crazy the way it growls," Cyr said. 'His mouth was wide open right in front of my face so the last thing I remember I had his tongue in my hand and I didn't want to let go because he was trying to fight me off. So he was hitting me with his claws, so I says, 'If you're going to hurt me, I'm going to hurt you too.' So he was biting his tongue at the same time."

Cyr said he thought he was a goner.

"For a second, I thought I was dead ... that's the first thing that comes to your mind when you open your eyes and see that friggin' mouth full of teeth and a tongue in there," he said. "It's like ... an extreme sport."

Cyr said escaped behind a tree, lucky to wind up with only superficial claw wounds to his belly and a bite on his knee.

I had a similar experience myself son... only I didn't grab his tongue... I had to make it more personal. I haven't seen that bear again since that fateful day!!

I tried that with my second wife.. I guess it doesn’t always work, but in either case, in an emergency it’s worth a try.. ugh .. :)

Quite a novel approach ! What person or animal would purposely bite down on their own tongue to get food or (now we learn) defend itself ! WOW !
