It is moronic because it is worth far more alive than dead. Not to these particular hunters. They can sell the skin, or stuff it.
Hunting season is hunting season. If it's moose hunting season, and they have a hunting license, then they can bag a moose. Doesn't matter if it's brown, white, or pink with purple stripes.
