Where's Craig Kimbrel? Not in the game (Oct. Baseball Live Thread)
ESPN ^ | October 8, 2013 | David Schoenfield

Posted on 10/08/2013 10:04:36 AM PDT by campaignPete R-CT

Craig Kimbrel is supposedly the heir to Mariano Rivera. In his postseason career as closer, Rivera recorded 27 appearances of 2+ innings.

Uribe bunted two balls foul, ... and then tomahawked a high fastball from David Carpenter into left-field stands for a shocking two-run homer ....

Note that I wrote "David Carpenter" and not "Craig Kimbrel."

The Braves had to win this game. Lose, and they go home. Somehow they lost -- in the late innings, no less -- without using the most dominant relief pitcher in the game.

The sad thing is, Gonzalez apparently didn't even think of using Kimbrel for two innings. "I think six outs isn't something we were even talking about in the dugout," he said after the game.

But what’s the difference between four outs and six outs? Six pitches? Ten pitches? And that doesn’t even factor in that the Dodgers had the 5-6-7 hitters due up in the eighth and the 8-9-1 hitters up in the ninth.

So instead you lost a game with a guy who had a 6.07 ERA last year for the Houston Astros.

... ".. I want the ball." We'll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn't say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

This should be covered in Managing 101. ... Who cares if it's the seventh inning or the eighth inning or the ninth. I'd rather lose with Carpenter in the ninth inning or the 10th inning or whenever ...

Look, managing your bullpen in a structured manner in the regular season is one thing.

October is not the regular season.

Fredi Gonzalez didn't think the best reliever in the game can get six outs.

He ended up getting none.

Thanks for that link.

A few years ago I asked my DIL if baseball started in Japan during the Occupation.

Boy,was I put in my place. I felt like The Ugly American.:-)

I still won’t go to any public celebration. Not happening.

We went to the 2004 parade and celebration in Boston. It was fantastic, but - yes - crazy, and it was a big hassle to get into town. We had no choice but to park way outside Boston and take the T into town. To be honest, we're really not familiar with the T.

It was fun, but I'm not really interested in going this year IF the Red Sox win the WS (I think they will).

Hubby wants to go... I reminded him that NESN runs the whole celebration/parade live... ;-)

If they win on Wednesday night, I think the parade will be on Thursday. It's doubtful that we can attend the celebration on a weekday anyway...

I used to live right in the city across from the Prudential Center in the Back Bay. Being on the front lines of New England sports celebrations was the best. I sure miss it.

Wow... right now, that would be the perfect location to take part in Red Sox World Series win in Boston!

Fearless prediction: David Ross will one day manage the Red Sox..

Ross says because of his gray beard, his new nickname has lately been "Coach"... LOL.

Seriously, though, I think you may be right, Ken, that Ross will one day manage the Red Sox.

I'm surprised we haven't seen Jason Varitek more often around the Sox. I know he is employed in some role with the Red Sox (probably with young players in southern locations, ie Florida), but he's been largely absent during the Red Sox playoffs, other than being one of the 2004 players throwing out a first pitch at Fenway the other night.

Japan’s been playing pro ball for ~100 years, IIRC.

Also, Japan and MLB are looking to make changes to the “Posting” system to ease the process of Japanese players wanting to play here.

After the Marathon Bombing, no more big public gathering events for me anyway.

I like Varitek, but he doesn't have the emotional temperment, the equilibrium, to manage today's players. Ross does..

Ross is signed through next season. Sawx will likely lose one or two coaches ( to manage other teams ) in the next two years. I see Ross retiring after next season...either getting a coaching gig with the team in 2015, or being sent to manage a minor league team for a year or two.

Farrell's young enough ( 51) that he could manage for 10+ years, but Boston is such an intense environment they tend to burn out quick. Look at Francona...won two WS, left..took a year off to rejuvenate, then did a great job with the Tribe..

Read somewheres that while the Sawx going for last to about to win it all is remarkable, even more amazing is Lackey's transformnation. At the start of the season, he was easily less popular in Beantown than Djokar. So, if he wins tomorrow, they're suggestion that he should be allowed to order in beer and fried chicken for the entire team in the clubhouse....

Yeah, I heard Ferrell. Supposedly, Peavy is penciled in to start a possible game 7; however, I just heard Ferrell say “all-hands-on-deck” for game 7 and that you may see Lester too, and Victorino will be back in right field for game 6.

MLB Network: the Cardinals plane was stuck on the tarmac in St Louey for 4 hours with mechanical problems before they took off to Boston. Omen?

My husband just came home from work and told me that the Cardinals' plane is still stuck on the Tarmac, as of 7:30pm ET. He heard this info via WEEI radio (Red Sox radio). There's a link on Drudge as well.

Wow, the plot thickens on the Red Sox/Cardinals World Series...

Update from CBS Boston: Cardinals plane STILL on the ground in St. Louis as of 8:04 PM ET.

So if I have this right, this saga started around 5:30 PM ET, and they're still on the ground as of 8:04 PM ET?

Hey, I'm a Red Sox fan, but if this is true, I really feel bad for the Cards...
