Did you read the article? No port would allow him to dock. He was out of food, fuel, and money. The crew was getting rebelious. He received an award for his courage and his ability to hold the crew in check.

There is a larger point to the article. Apparently there are dozens of ships floating around the oceans in a similar state for weeks and months. Irresponsible owners abandoning ships and crews.

IANAL or a sailor but could the law of the sea handle such a situation?

A lawyer might argue that

(1) Failure to pay the captain/crew's salary is effectively a termination of employment.

(2) Without an official captain/crew on board, the ship is derelict and may be seized for salvage by anyone.

(3) Therefore, the former crew are now the rightful owners of the ship.

SO WHAT! Just drive it in and park it... the BK company would abandon it and the dockyard will deal with the abandoned vessel.

Would you rather sit just offshore on a ship without food and starve?
