Zero is at the top, so I’m guessing gravity just pulls the needle down to one side or the other when the car isn’t on.

"Shouldnt the accelerometer be reading Zer0?"It probably has electrical circuits which only turn on when the car is running. It then would go to one side or the other when it's off.
Note that the scale only goes to .8 Gs. Modern Corvettes can easily pull 1.1 laterally and longitudinally. It's not clear which axis this one is reading.
