In sports, you 'play up' if you can compete at a higher level.

Of course. That would be why in coed sports in our educational establishments we were always told to "go easy" on the girls, and "give them a chance to score".

Couldn't knock them down because they might get hurt, and couldn't outscore them too badly (if we were allowed to win) because it would make them feel bad.

With a hoop one foot lower to make it fairer for them.

you know that “go easy” mantra goes both ways....young girls know that they have to not act too smart to attract a boy...iows...they have to “go easy” on the boys and let the boys think their superior.....

We had a coed intramural basketball league in college. Teams had to have no more than 3 men on the floor at a time. Men were not allowed inside the key on offense or defense, nor were they allowed to block shots or shoot free throws when fouled.

I didn’t play.
