I don’t know how people smoke unfiltered cigs. My grandpa smoked Camels and was always spitting out bits of tobacco.
I guess it was considered “unmanly” to smoke filtered cigs until the 1960s.

The ‘trick’ is/was to pack them before opening the pack. Also, before lighting them rap them on the lighter - a lot easier with a Zippo than with matches or those round(ish) bics.
I personally ‘justified’ the non filters as reasoning a filter drew all the ‘bad stuff’ to the filter and increased the chance of lip and tongue cancer?
Also the filters somewhat brought about the end to getting the end of the cigarettes wet.
There was a name for it but I can’t recall it right away.
