It was an era when the country as whole was a lot more pro-family, pro-Judeo-Christian ethics, pro-patriotism and pro-capitalism than it is now. Even if Hollywood itself was not those things, they had to make their products accordingly if they wanted to sell them in the free market. In 1968, the movie ratings system came into effect and filmmakers no longer had to get their scripts pre-approved according to the Hays office to make sure they didn’t include material deemed “offensive” which is part of the reason I like so many of the movies from the pre-1968 era.

The level of patriotism for both Democrats and Republicans was extremely high in those days. That’s why so many hippies were reviled by adults in the sixties. So many of them were leftists who not only expressed hatred of capitalism, many of them openly called the U.S. evil. But they, the leftists, were the evil people. And believe me, there were just as many commies in the universities as there is now. Except the popular culture and most politicians were still pro-America. That has changed in the last fifty years. Now conservatives fight battles on three fronts: politicians, entertainers, and the old foes academicians.
