NEWPORT, Tenn.— A Tennessee judge said parents can name their 8-month-old baby “Messiah,” overturning the decision of another judge who thought the name was blasphemous.

At a paternity hearing last month, child support magistrate Lu Ann Ballew was asked to decide Messiah Deshawn Martin’s surname. Ballew ended up changing the baby’s first name as well, saying that “Messiah” was a title reserved for Jesus Christ.....

SNL hasn’t been even remotely good for over 10 years, but this skit was near the end of the half-way decent years. It was around ‘97.

Missed the Deniro skit. But just about anything with Deniro is bound to be great.

A recent world-wide poll had "diarrhea" as the most beautiful girl's name.

No reason at all, legally. I think its unwise, and sets a bad precedent, but I dont see how it can be legally challenged.

What if someone decided to really be edgy and name their kid a universally known obscenity. Should "f**k J*sus" be forbidden?

If I remember correctly the original reason the parents, mother and father, were in court was because they both wanted the child’s surname to be their own. And the judge changed the first name, Messiah, to Martin, the mother’s surname with the father’s surname as the child’s surname. I don’t remember the father’s surname. My memory is either turning to swiss cheese or becoming a colander, not sure which.

If the mother had named the child “The Messiah Martin” rather then Messiah Martin, then Judge would have been correct in changing the name. As it is Messiah is not necessarily “The Messiah.”

“Deshawn” is the part that bothers me.

Parents have saddled their kids with horrible names since the beginning of time
I used to joke with my lovely daughter before she got engaged that if she ever marries some guy named Ford, Dodge, Benz, Bentley, Ferrarri, etc. if they have a daughter, PLEASE don't name her Lisa, she'll never forgive her ;)

I watch SNL every Sat night. Some years have been better than others, for sure, but I still like it. This coming year may be bad because almost all of the old crew who have been there for many years, has moved on. I can’t agree that the last 10 years have been all bad.

I dont know what the exact law is on what you can and cannot name your children, but my understanding is there aren't very many restrictions.

Names are odd things. There is nothing more personal than your name, and yet you get assigned it to you by other people. Given the increasingly selfish pseudo-edgy nature of people in the last fifty years its hardly surprising the number of people officially changing their names has sky rocketed. I mean would you WANT to be called f**J*sus? Or Pixie frou-frou? Or Trixiebell? Or the collected surnames of a football team?
