I always associate Great Lakes with USN training.

Aren’t they all Seaman Recruits? or have they started traig Air Force enlistees at Great Lakes?

Not if they came in with a rate.

For those headed for engineering ratings, replace Seaman with Fireman. Similarly, aviation ratings use Airman, Seabees use Constructionman, and Corpsmen use Hospitalman.

If I recall, we all were Seaman Recruit’s until graduation where you then go on to A School for specific rating training and your rating or “specialty” determines what moniker you are referred to as from E1-E3.

Shooter was an E4 (rate) AE3 (Aviation Electronics Petty Officer 3rd Class)
