That is the ‘new speak’....
I notice those two annoying announcers for the Nationals keep saying things like “he is one RBI shy of 40” or “if the next 6 hitters get on and score, the next guy will be the tying run at the plate”...and one of my favorites - runner gets to 2nd base in TOP of 9th (or whatever) ‘the winning run is on 2nd’.

For every ‘decent’ think FP says, he has 200 inane, nonsensical babble pass through his lips...

I liked Dibble but he wasn’t enough of a ‘homer’ for the MASN/NATS taste.....

Thanks and good comparison to sports announcers. I watch the Yankees and Michael Kay comes up with some inane comments at least two or three times a game.
Worst though are football announcers coming up with "going vertical" (a pass), or "putting the ball on the ground" (a fumble), et al.
I watch most games these days with the sound ... not "about" but EXACTLY - off.
