Need new Laptop should I stay with with Windows 7? (avoid Win 8)

I have seen several laptop models I like but they have Windows 8 installed. I need to stay with a Windows OS, but having read poor reviews, it appears Win 8 may become the next Vista. Is it that bad? I like Win 7 but it limits my selection. As always, any suggestions/input appreciated.

Yeah, Macs are great if you want to pay an extra $1,000 and never use any entertainment software.

There’s a reason why Linux is the choice of 90% of systems administrators and 0.02% of non-CS people. You’ve got Linux-user’s disease: the inability to recognize that normal people don’t appreviations like “dist” because they don’t even use words like “distribution.” Normal people don’t know how to yum and certainly don’t know how to pipe a sed. They click and drag, they don’t mv, and when they unpack a program, are completely rendered helpless when they get told they need a dependency.

Linux users are a guild I joined late in life. But what is so lame is how linux users are completely immune to recognizing that they know Linux because they are programmers or system administrators, and not only is there nothing at all intuitive about Linux, but “—help” does not actually teach anything useful to someone who is not themselves a coder.

Seriously consider an Apple, the service can’t be beat, go with the extended Apple care and even when that expires in 4 years your laptop will still work like a top. That is baring a EMP or some other government mandated disaster.

yes and if you enjoy reloading windows, by all means get another windows box...

and pay $400 for a anchor that will be obsolete in 1 year and go through endless patches, that may or may not work, and if they work they will screw up something else Microsoft related.

An then when you past your35th birthday in your moms basement you may discover that there are other people that look beyond "entertainment" in the confines of the aforementioned basement and have that life changing epiphany and realize that you can turn the computer off!

(/grin)

You may have a point because I met Linus online in 1991 and have been using Linux for many years.

Oh dear, I really don’t know what to do. My Toshiba laptop died and I don’t know what to buy next. My son-in-law loves Apple and wants me to get an i pad. My son thinks Apple is overpriced and trendy.

If I get an Apple ipad, I won’t be able to transfer my games from my old laptop, and it may be too small for my aging eyes. Plus, I am used to a real keyboard and a mouse.

However, if I get a Windows laptop, I will probably be stuck with Windows 8, and even though laptops have larger screens, they are heavier and less portable than a tablet.

*sigh*
