My husband called me tonight from a gold mine where he works in the interior of Alaska. I thought you might like to hear a bear story that was unusual. There is a guard gate to the mine and then a fifty mile dirt road that goes up steep hills. This guy was on his way up the hill when a caribou ran out of the woods and right into his truck. He gets out of the truck and looks at the injured caribou. Just then a black bear comes running out of the woods and grabs the caribou and finishes it off. The bear starts guarding the caribou on the road. The truck driver calls the guard gate to let them know how his truck was damaged and drives on up to the mine. I'm sure he was a little shaken but at least he didn't have to deal with an injured caribou.

The trees are huge and so close together, really pretty.
Just a note to anyone interested in working at Pogo. They hire from all over the US including the lower 48. You can fill out an application on the internet. People that live in the lower 48 usually work a month and off two weeks. After three promotions (usually years) you can work two weeks on and two weeks off if you want a pay cut. They feed everyone great and each person has their own room.
Mill operators usually start as laborers and graduate to mill operators after a six month trial period. If you have any questions, I try to answer them.

I’ve got family in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

J. Frank Dobie was the folklorist and author of a number of books about early Texas. He wrote a book simply entitled, “Longhorn”. He tells a story of riders working in Montana. They came upon a area of destruction within the timber. Finally they saw a dead grizzly and a short time later a big old longhorn near death and terribly torn to pieces. A shoulder was torn out and an eye was missing. They put the animal down but couldn’t believe that the longhorn had got the better of the grizzly.
Caribou typically weight up to 400 pounds, with unusually large males up to 700.
This compares to mule deer, up to 450 pounds, and elk up to 1300.
The trees are Redwoods in the northwestern corner of California. This property has been logged at least 3 times in the last 150 years and these are the suckers that come up from the stump. They are referred to as second growth Redwood...

Speaking of bears.....
I live just east of Seattle.
One of our City Council members owns a weekend home in the nearby Cascades.
This same time last year he took his dog out at bedtime and was attacked by a female bear.
Horrible wounds - the bear literally tried to chew his head right off his neck.
He still looks like a zombie after much plastic surgery.
The attack completely changed his personality, too.
Pre-attack, he was a relentless Conservative.
Now he's buckling under to the Progressives on our 50-50 City Council.

We are very aware of a possible attack and don’t wander out at night or agitate them by day. With 3 cubs she must forage 24/7 and her fall back is the town garbage cans. My current wife saw 4 cans tipped over on her 6am walk this morning
