I respectfully beg to differ. Ninety-nine years ago, all it took was the assassination of an Austrian prince to plunge the World into what, at the time, was the largest war in human history. The conditions now are not so much different. The geo-political order is changing in ways that our leaders are not, IMHO, taking into account in their "calculus."

Russian warships are deployed in the Med and the Chinese have dispatched their naval forces as well. The Middle East is a tinderbox ruled by tribal zealots with a 7th century Weltanschauung and the putative "leader" of the Free World is a dithering nincompoop who apparently is bent on giving aid to our mortal enemies, Al Qaeda and related gangs.

Nothing good will come of this dillitantish escapade.

That is exactly correct. Many folks are trying to describe the Syrian situation today as another Munich, or as another Iraq, or as another Kosovo.

Syria is none of these. It is another Sarajevo. 1914 all over again. A small country (Serbia then, Syria now) is accused of a criminal act. A large country (Austria then, USA now) issues an ultimatum.

No one wants to lose face. Things spiral out of control. A major war breaks out.
