Careful with varmint grenades and other such fragmenting loads for self defense. They are designed to basically explode, ie, violently fragment on contact so you won’t get much penetration.

There’s something to be said for fragmenting. Though there’s something to be said for penetrating too. Unless they’re wearing BPVs, I wouldn’t want too much penetration. The ability of the old M193 ball round to inflict devastating injuries was due to it’s fragmentability at high velocity. It was actually considered “inhumane”. The heavier SS109 projectile fired from the M855 ball round also fragments but it loses its ability to fragment after it hits about 2,700 fps making it particularly unsuited for carbine length rifles out beyond 70-100 yards. The varmint grenade, on the other hand, fragments at much lower velocities which A.) makes it unlikely to go through the perp where it can hurt an innocent bystander/family member and B.)extends the range at which fragmentation can occur. Magazines can be filled with different ammo for different purposes too incidentally. My $.02 worth there.
