Letter to me from mother describing what public school did to her daughter. For a few words this is a great summary of everything that’s gone wrong:
“We are now a homeschooling family, but we didn’t start out that way. We pulled my daughter out in 1st grade- one of the many casualties of whole word learning in Kindergarten, then went on to be the victim of ‘construct your own’ theory of math (they said, “She doesn’t come up with strategies.” I wanted to yell at them, “She’s six! Construct theories from WHAT?” I spent a lot of time, in those early months, searching for answers. Your site was instrumental in cutting through the bs I was hearing in the RTI meetings, my inability to match my daughter’s sparkling mind with her problems at school, my worry and doubt. I thank you for that.
We are heading into our third year, and she is straddling 4th and 5th grade-light-years ahead of her peers, and complaining that her work is too easy ;). And this... from the child who was convinced she was stupid, from the daughter I worried would never learn to read or do basic math.”
