They don’t know. The MSF (Doctors without borders) who treated most of the victims wasn’t sure whether it was sarin, or some amateur compound derived from pesticides. However, eye-witnesses described a strong stench from the chemicals, which suggests the latter since military-grade sarin is odorless.
