Acer Computer Help Needed - Loose key

The letter A. The metal pieces are still connected and everything looks fine but it won't click back into place. When it sort of clicks into place, the upper part of the key doesn't seem to click into place so sticks up higher. Yes, I've cleaned out the cat hair. The lower part/bottom edge of the key seems to click in but it is lower then the other keys. I'm thinking there might be a missing rubber cap or gasket thingie that fits between the underside of the key and the white nipple thingie that pushes the whatever that makes the key work. I tried putting a piece of pencil eraser in there but it needed something different so I am now using some layers of double stick scotch tape. The tape gets the job done but with a lot of effort. So, is there a cap or gasket missing or is there something else wrong.

I called the repair shop and they only want to talk replacing the entire keyboard for $80. Ach, I'll suffer with a wonky key for that price.

I tried loosening the number lock key, since it is never used, to see what's what but can't get it off.

while we’re at it, my dtrs Acer has the fbi virus....I’ll probably take it in today to get fixed....I can’t get past safe mode...it keeps trying to start, then start again, but nothing happens....

Do you have a recovery partition? If you do and do not need to recover data off the machine just restore the operating system on your c drive. This should take anywhere from 10-20 minutes but remember all data will be lost after this operation.

External keyboard or use some glue and live with it sticking up a bit - it’s way over at the side and MAY HELP KEEP YOU FROM ACCIDENTALLY HITTING CAPS LOCK...

Ok...you have 3 options.

1. Eliminate or drastically cut back on your use of the letter "A" in the future. Maybe substitute a different vowel like the letter "E" in its place. :)

2. I've been in the same position. Try pressing that key flat again and apply a touch more pressure than you probably think you should. While pressing down, give the key a gentle wiggle up, down, left, right. It may just catch whatever latch it is missing. The key may never be quite the same. It might look just a bit more raised than the others and you may get annoyed if your finger seems to catch and lift the edge of it while you are typing.

3. You could also search the web on your make and model and shop online for a replacement keyboard. They are usually between $20-$40 or so and generally easy to replace (not sure about your specific model). Most laptops require you to gently pry off a strip of plastic near the top of your keyboard, exposing two screws that can be removed to disconnect the existing keyboard.

Usually in most cases like this the entire keyboard has to be replaced.

If it seems like a total loss, you can get Logitech keyboards at Walmart for around $12..check your local walmart online.

But I do have problems with my Acer not wanting to connect to the internet when I’m away from home.

What do you mean by that? You select "safe mode" and it doesn't work (continuous boot loop)? Or "safe mode" is the ONLY mode that works (anything else results in continuous boot loop)?

It's probably just depressed when your gone. Poor thing.

Shut off your wifi.

What that virus does is so long as WIFI is on, it will block safe mode.

Shutting off the wifi and then booting in safe mode should work. Worked for me when I had to fix someone else’s computer.
