In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
apheresis (for 1: uh-FER-i-sis, for 2: af-uh-REE-sis) noun
1. The loss of one or more sounds or letters from the beginning of a word. For example, the change in pronunciation of knife from (k-nyf) to (nyf) or the omission of letters as in squire for esquire, or count for account.
2. A method in which blood is drawn from a donor, one or more blood components (such as plasma, platelets, or white blood cells) are removed, and the rest is returned to the donor by transfusion.
Example sentences:
"Williams gives the Narragansett word in full [poquauhock], though common usage reduced it and Anglicized it through apheresis [to quahog]."
--Ray Huling; Harvesting the Bay; Lyons Press; 2012.
"He had quartered in Memphis with Cynthia for weeks, giving over his stem cells through apheresis."
--Jan Karon; In the Company of Others; Viking; 2010.
Etymology:
From Latin aphaeresis, from Greek aphairesis (taking away), from aphairein (to take away), from apo- (away) + hairein (to take). Earliest documented use: 1550.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
I only know from my sisters’ experiences. But the theory on that thread that there are so many people from elsewhere probably has some merit.
I’ve probably told you before that the very first winter my oldest sister was there, fresh out of college, living in Bethesda, she had someone slide into her because there was a half inch of snow.
I avoided the entire area on my trip to VA Beach.
oh but this is for you.
Looks like NYC is going to revert to the 70’s.
There goes the murder rate
Ugh. Doesn’t even look like her.
i totally agree, she looks completely diff and not in a good way either.
Outstanding. A+++
I agree. Perfect choice.
Every time I see the news
I have to shake my head-
Foreign policy should be clear
But is schizophrenic instead
While more of our incomes
Are taken by apheresis now
The emperor begins looking
For still another cash cow
I guess he thinks another war
May improve his image for free-
But in all truth, another Viet Nam
Is what this is bound to be...
A quote that may last until I reach 90.
The young ‘uns don’t understand it.
Did you know this month is named after a famous Roman tax collector, Seizure Augustus? That’s o.k., at first my history teacher cried a lot too.
A+ for you! Our heat index is 100 today. Ugh. I am grateful that I work indoors.
Now that’s more like your normal post. :-)
I’m trying to advance from the literary (Mad Magazine) to the performing arts (Three Stooges).
It is humid and muggy here, too, but late August to mid September is usually the last and worst of summer...
It appears that I have enough metal to frame the interior of the nest I have drawn plans for, enough unopened boxes of the ceramic tile used on the bathroom floors here to do the floor of a large bathroom, and enough pine flooring planks to floor about 180 sq. ft-a medium sized bedroom. I haven’t calculated the savings yet, but I’m sure they are decent...
I love saving money!
