The first five years or so of Pete's career, the MLB minimum was $5,000. The guys who drove the team bus made more than that! A mobster could buy these guys for life. Bernie Goldberg did a piece on REAL SPORTS intimating that certain 1978 Yankees (Reggie) were in deep debt to mobsters and dropped fly balls.
Thanks to Curt Flood, Marvin Miller and the free market, nowadays all players have more money than any mobsters. But, I bet they still prey upon NCAA athletes.
