Mr Musk has denied it will be a so-called vactrain, a concept that is already being pursued by a company in Colorado. His idea does involve a tube, but not a vacuum tube, he said, adding: Not frictionless, but very low friction. couldn't help myself:

Mr Musks intended location for the first Hyperloop is California, between Los Angeles and San Francisco. His motivation for the project came from disillusionment with the Golden States high speed rail project, which has been dubbed the bullet train to nowhere after a series of setbacks.
Well, why not?
Oh. Wait. California. Does anyone suppose the People's Republic of California would welcome competition with its hare-brained scheme?
Maybe the east coast.

Elon Musk is exceptionally smooth at getting government money and making the public think it is a private enterprise.

Guess I’ll go waaaay out on a limb and say that maybe not every idea has been thought of yet, or at least not enough to be ridiculed on FR. Let’s see what he’s got and let the market decide. Sounds intriguing, you know at one point Horseless Carriages seemed pretty far-fetched too.

I am continually amazed that people want to build so many buildings and train lines and now the possibility of a tube transportation device and all of them want them built over the most unstable area of the USA.
Makes for great disaster films.

Musk is for real. And he’s only 42. Move over, Edison.

Yep
And ounce a terrorist does their thing on the hyper then the TSA will do theirs then the time wasted and inconvenience will be equal to air travel.

He’ll never get it built for 1/10 the cost of the current CA high-speed rail, and even if he could - never get the funding of $6.5B [much less anything more if it is more costly], and it’ll never be profitable ...
