It was going from pic/sound to black/silent, for variable time periods.
You have never really lived until you experience quietly sitting on shift early in the morning and suddenly all the alarm panels flash red, crypto drops sync, claxon alarms blare and the teletypes run wildly open with a deafening chatter. You quickly dial up the radio monitor and hear a woman's voice randomly counting in German on the frequency you are tuned to. After a little while the Naval Security group advises down to the exact city block in East Berlin that the signal is coming from and stop bugging them with previously known and identified MIJIs.
