There should be more than one cone though. And the material that this one is made of is different than what you find flowing from a volcano.

True.
Limestone and chip.
It may be a gas breakout.
They do have that permaburning natural gas seep over there too.
And it may be a result of a nuke capping procedure as someone else mentioned.
But it was discovered in 1949.
So that doesn’t fit.
It being a natural gas seep cone, that would explain people dying near it.
Hmm.

Wonder if they could do seismic tomography near there to get a view of what’s below?

Yep, need tomography, perhaps some test wells to find out what’s down there. Agree the date would have to be a fabrication for the nuke theory, but that theory lends itself better to the formation, the material it consists of, and the stated radioactivity.

Heck, I’m not qualified to do any of the work, but I’d be glad to go and do some schlepping to find out what’s down there.

While on a smaller scale you can see the process of gelifluction on these permafrost heaves.

I’m back to my original thought that something had to have created a nice round hole for the material below to be pushed back out of. Impact from a very dense and relatively small object is also a possibility of how the initial borehole was formed, IMO.

Yes, but the size of this one makes it hard to believe that could have been the process here? Then there should be similar others in the area.

That would be interesting to go do. ;)

not necessarily....

Certainly the processes by there self are not unique though the formation is. I would be hesitant to think that just because only one was found others do or did not exist.

Certainly the area according to the map was heavily involved with the ice fields.

but who knows....lol

Heck, I’d love to get a full 360 area map of what’s underground.

Limestone isn’t known for being plastic ands malleable, so to do that.. makes me want to see the seismic tomography even more.

Yes; there are some trees; no, the rocks don't look volcanic. Google Earth has the area slightly blurred, probably to keep Russia pacified, though there are many photos available.

According to studies of Siberian scientists, the crater formed during the 300-350 years since the end of the beginning of the 15th or 16th centuries. The zoning of the crater caused by geological processes and intensive introduction of deep gas flows of matter, which led to the transformation of silicate rocks within the crater. "An important confirmation of these ideas were the result of s geophysics from St. Petersburg (SB State University of Mining) and Yekaterinburg (Institute of Geophysics, UB RAS). Performing gravimetric and geoelectrical investigations in a professional manner, they also came to the firm conviction that Patom crater has a depth of an endogenetic nature ", – said Antipin. source

From this, I infer the gist of the matter is that it was an earth fart, rather than either a volcanic or cosmic event.

A gassing event would explain many, if not all, of the reported sicknesses, avoidances, and deaths.

Obama said he had nothing to do with it.

I don't accept a "earth-fart" as conclusive. The uniformity of the formation causes me to have some doubt with that hypothesis.

More study is needed, especially what the makeup of the geology underground is like.

I agree; too much missing data that more investigation needs to discover, before a more definitive explanation can be derived. The ‘earth fart’ comment that was what I understood to be the gist of the quoted more less tentatively accepted hypothesis, as opposed to the other two mainline contenders.

Agree, I’d expect the cause to be just as unusual as the result. :)
