I think that “legally” they are not allowed to put mail anywhere other than in a mailbox.
That said, if we get a largeish package, the mailman usually brings it to the porch. They actually make a special run before they do their regular route.
I’ve had big boxes left on the stoop or next to the garage door.
I got my package of samples, after waiting for the carrier at the end of the road-she was scowling at the inconvenience, and practically threw the box at me, telling me what a drag her job was-I reminded her there are people who don’t have a job now, and left.
She is a CONTRACT mail carrier, as have rural mail carriers been ever since I can remember-and I’m pretty sure they still have more leeway than a city carrier. I’ve never had a rural carrier before who wouldn’t drive the less than 3/4 of a mile to leave a package that didn’t fit at my gate or anyone else’s.
