2014 Indian Motorcycles Revealed in Sturgis

The legend has returned – and its splash is sure to reverberate from Main Street all the way to Juneau Avenue in Milwaukee. The new generation of American V-Twin cruisers made its grand debut in front of a crowd of thousands of enthusiasts and dignitaries at the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame Saturday night.......

For those who worried Polaris would severely alter the legend, fear not: the new 2014 Indians harken back to a bygone era of motorcycling.

Looks to me like another Harley with big fenders.
What is this, the 5th or 6th reincarnation of Indian? And the last two or three trying to look like something designed in 1935.

So now Polaris reinvents Indian with 75 year old stying, Fifty year old handling, Twenty five year old performance and calls it the NEW Indian.
I know, I know. It's fast. As fast as a BMW?
I know, I know. It handles. As well as a Honda?
I know,I know, it is beautiful. As beautiful as a Ducati?
Oh wait,it has “Classics Styling”. Yep.so does a Ural.

I’d ditch those fenders and that exhaust but love the motor and tan seat and bags.....it is the traditional Indian appearance, but in this livery. it ain’t my cup o tea

When cars and trucks were mostly Model T’s. It must have been a rare experience.

A co-worker of mine’s father was a New Mexico State Policeman in the 30’s (he’d been a bar tender, but disliked drunks, joined the force and turned in all the bootlegger suppliers he knew). He covered about 1500 square miles on 30’s New Mexico roads on a Harley, and was issued a Winchester 1895 carbine in .30-06 and a S&W M&P .38.

Lawmen like this were common in NM up to the 70’s. Tomas Herrera was a Bernallilo County Deputy from 1943 to 1973. His duty area was from about where I-25 would be to the eastern line of BC, a couple miles east of me. He was the only Deputy... and nobody messed with him.

I always feel sorry for the unsuspecting people that try to come here during the rally. Right now, I opened my home up to a dear friend and her family from Newcastle, Wy. Her husband is critically ill and in the hospital here in Rapid City. Of course, there are no rooms at the motels available at any price. Campgrounds are also full. I’m happy to be able to do it. The rally is financially a real boon to the Hills, but it comes at a price.

We locals usually try to stock up on groceries before the bikers come, but because of the unexpected guests, I had to venture to Safeway for extras. I waited about 15 minutes to find an opening in the traffic before I could get onto Hwy. 16 and into town. I love the bikers (my husband and sons all have Harleys) but I’ll be glad when they are gone.

I have many fond memories from my high school and college years when my best friend and I roamed through the upper Midwest on two vintage motorcycles. Mine was a '46 74 cubic inch HD with a 'suicide' clutch and side shifter on the gas tank and my friend had a robin's egg blue 74 c.i. Indian that was a year or two newer than mine. What a treat to go rumbling down the byways of North and South Dakota and Minnesota on those two great bikes. Each had its own distinct exhaust register. I still have my HD but my friend sold his and then tried to buy it back some years later. The new owner refused to sell it and recently had the bike completely professionally restored. He put it in a Plexiglas display box and has had offers of $40,000+ for the bike. If I live long enough, I would like to do the same with my old side valve and have the two steads displayed together in some museum somewhere. I bought the HD from my uncle for $300. He also tried to later buy it back from me, but the bike is more valuable to me as a keepsake remembrance than its intrinsic value.

Sorry but Harleys look like Indians. Indians were first. Does it matter who own the Indian name now? Most companies change ownership after a time. At least it's an American owner.
25 year old performance? It's a newly designed 111 cubic inch engine with ABS and cruise control.
Yes it's as fast as most BMW's that aren't sports bikes.
It handles as well as a comparable Honda. (Shadow, F6B, 1300).
Ducati's are beautiful bikes, but they are sports bikes. The 2014 Indian is beautiful on a whole different level.

Ural definitely has a classic look. East German post war classic. I prefer classic American bikes.

No one is asking you to like the new Indian though. Go buy your BMW/Ducati/Honda and I'll still wave to you regardless of what you are riding from the back of my own Honda...but I'll be wishing I was on an Indian.

The last time Indian came out it used an S&S copycat Harley Engine, it had few dealerships and it was way overpriced.

This time it appears to have a Polaris Engine which is a proven design and they hold up well, it has the backing of Polaris dealerships and it is selling at the right price.

I predict this will be a winner.

As for the old styling. Great Old School is the best school.
I want one. When will they be at my Polaris dealer.
