dictionaries ad nauseam | 29 July 2013 | Thursday's sub

Posted on 07/29/2013 5:04:16 AM PDT by secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

auspices (AW-spi-seez) noun
1. Patronage, support, or sponsorship.
2. A favorable sign.

Example sentence:
"In March, Serbian and Kosovo officials met under EU auspices for their first high-level face-to-face talks."
---Kosovo Parliament Rejects Move to Cancel Talks; Agence France Presse (Paris); May 5, 2011

Etymology:
Plural of auspice, from Latin auspicium (divination from flight of birds), from auspex (bird watcher), from avis (bird) + specere (to look at). Ultimately from the Indo-European root awi- (bird), which is also the source of avian, ostrich, osprey, oval, ovum, ovary, egg, and caviar. Earliest documented use: 1611.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I thought you had an Australian Shepherd. Bichons are good for allergy prone people too, since they shed very little and their dander isn’t as irritating.

This world is going to hell in a handbasket. I would be for shooting the perp, too. I have had enough with hoodlums risking the lives of others. No sympathy for the 14 year old burglar shot in someone’s back yard at 2am, either. The Trayvons of this world need to turn away from crime. It does not pay.

Yes, but he didn’t see any plates and with the windshield shattered he couldn’t make out any details. Of course the truck never stopped.

I intended to bring leftover bday cake to class this AM, from my bday on Sat, but didnt get the chance. Chan is resting but seems to be feeling better. The vet suggested canned food today as shes starting the meds which can cause GI trouble, she seemed to enjoy that. We had to hold the chubbikins, Jules, off of her dish til she finished. He’s such a big bruiser! Had to buy the medium sized dog heart worm meds bc he’s over 27 lbs! Twice chans size.
