Piglets can be terribly cute, and have about the same level of intelligence as chimpanzees. It gets noticeable when they are raised around puppies, because they can often out think them and actually teach some skills to the puppies.

Farmers can get their hands on any antibiotic that is produced and use it with impunity. I was amazed at one of the small animal veterinarians that commented and was not aware of this. The Feed Stores, Catalog sales, and even Tractor Supply carry many antibiotics that can be misused. There are many unscrupulous veterinarians that will sell the producer any drug or antibiotic they want; if the vet doesn't they will shop around until they find one that will sell the unapproved drug. I saw this first hand here and my practice suffered for not bending to the pressure. I lost business at sale barns because I required the health certificates to be on animals that I had personally examined whereas before and after me the veterinarians just wrote the papers without ever having seen the animal. I have little respect for the cattle operations in this area because of the rank dishonesty that is pervasive in the culture.
