Mess Attendant Harmon was on the USS San Francisco in the naval Battle of Guadalcanal. He assisted the Pharmacists Mate in caring for the wounded and personally exposed himself to shield his wounded Executive Officer. Harmon was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
