But we knew that by climbing under our desks, we would be safe. So, all was well.

I will say my childhood was wonderful. Four older brothers and Sisters and two parents who knew what their job was and were not going to be found wanting.

They worked hard labor at times to make sure we had everything we needed. At other times Daddy had a good job and wa lived an average middle class life.

Polio and Smallpox had been wiped out. We had those new wonder drugs like penicillin and if you had an infection those drugs would kill them with ease.

During the Summer we kids would wander all over creation, knowing to be near home when meals were ready. Mother would just lean out the door and yell that dinner was ready and we would go eat a delicious meal that only Momma could make.

When I was 16 and saved up enough to order a Swedish Mauser from Freedland arms, well I ordered it and some ammo too. The rifle arrived railway express. The dealer had run out of the model I ordered and sent the next highest grade and it was a real beauty.

What a life.

From the text in the video:
"...before semi-automatics and crack...?"

There were many semi-automatics, and there's not much relationship between those and "crack."

And as for the anti-defense comments in the thread against the USA having nuclear weapons, the USA still has nuclear weapons. And our enemies have more ICBMs (many of them mobiles) than we do--thousands of missiles between them that can reach any part of our country, thanks to too many anti-defense lefties in business, political and academic positions. The air raids didn't bother me at all, but the hippies bothered our nation and continue to do so in their old age.

For my post #11,000, here are some tunes that reflect the culture of that era:

My childhood was far better and enjoyable than what I believe I was able to give my own children.

Mom at home, Dad working and supporting 6 kids. No way could anyone do that today. We never wanted for a thing.

Everything from family, and extended family, school, teachers, movies, music, tv shows, were far better than what my own have had to endure. Jeez, my parents never had to worry that a tv show on a Sunday evening was going to include some random vulgar language or nudity, or ED ads!

We had dinner together, no one was sitting around on an electronic device ie. gameboy, cell phone.

Church on Sundays and time with family. Outside ALL summer long, no worries, just be home for dinner.

I could go on and on but I imagine the majority here had the same experiences. Up to and including the under the desk drills. Somehow we still felt safe.

now that is INSPIRING, unlikely to be repeated in this "modern world but inspiring nonetheless.

Yes the GCA68 stopped that. It also caused some very entertaining mail order company’s to go out of business.

One of the, Herters was worth the price just for the reading.

I sure wish I had bought a .401 powermag from Herters. It was their proprietary revolver, made by JP Sauer and Sohn. An unbelievably good value considering the quality of the gun.

Of course you had to buy ammo, reloading dies etc. from Herters as no one else made the components except for the .40 caliber bullets.

I dunno, we had the bomb to practice for.

And now we still live in fear of the bomb, along with other weapons of mass destruction.

The America I grew up in was a paradise on earth compared to what it is now.
