I am stuck do to my wife’s elderly and sick and ‘not going to move’ parents.
I would leave here in a NY minute if it was not for family.

My first thoughts when I moved away from NY (due to job) was to transfer back as soon as possible (mid-80's). It took all of 6 months being away to convince me otherwise. After the parents came to visit their grandkids, they decided the same and followed us here. My widowed mother and both of my retired in-laws moved from NY and ended up passing away down here. I don't think they regretted the move at any time. We had two siblings follow us as well.
So far, I can honestly state that I don't miss the cold, taxes, or loss of freedom that exists in NYS...
