I have always thought those eating and drinking competitions were a bad idea. Actually a very bad idea.

I agree, I don’t really get the point either. Well, I guess in this case it was, “Pig out and die”.

In Isaiah the KJV condemns "masters of wine." The NASV translates it as "heroes of wine."

God endorsed consumption of alcoholic beverages (Deut 14) and recommended the euphoric properties of alcohol (Prov 31), but these drinking contests were condemned, as drunkenness. (Cf Prov 23)
