I heard those very same words in 1969 during a conversation with some fellow soldiers who were black. They told me that while they were in the Army they would have my back, but once we got back to the “world”, all that would change and it would be open season on me as a white boy...
I saw the same thing. The older NCO’s weren’t down with that crap but the younger blacks arrived with a real chip on their shoulder and a lot of hostility toward ‘the man’ (read whites).
They were 15% of my strength and 95% of my disciplinary problems.
I have to admit, I became something of a racist after 14 months in the ‘Nam.
