Parents are not civily responsible for children...even if under eighteen?

As a general rule, no (at least not in any state I'm aware of). There may be an exception if the parent is present and sees the child doing something and doesn't interfere, but Martin's parents wouldn't be civilly liable if he assaulted Zimmerman, because they weren't there.
