civil court is generally reserved for non-violent offenses, legal issues, financial problems, family court, minor traffic issues, fines, ordinance violations. these may or may not be against another person. with civio law, usually the plaintiff is seeking compensation for a wrong, but the defendant is not up for jail time-type sentences.

crimes are usually against another person. with crimes the main point of the trial is punishment of the wrongdoer and setting the precedent to deter others from doing the same crime.

negligence or malpractice are civil lawsuits. assault, battery, murder, are criminal lawsuits.
