Word For The Day, Monday, July 15, 2013 aleatory
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
sisyphean; adjective 1. of or pertaining to Sisyphus. 2. endless and unavailing, as labor or a task.
Etymology:
"resembling the labors of Sisyphus," 1635, from Sisyphus, from Gk. Sisyphos, a name of unknown origin. King of Corinth, famed as "the craftiest of men," he was condemned in the afterlife to roll uphill a stone which perpetually rolls down.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
sorry for the way the thread looks, i am at home today and posting this from an email. Secret, i know the blocks show up in your threads and they showed up the last time i posted from this, but today it decided not to. OH WELL! people can just deal with a less than pretty thread. And yes, i do see that the word ALEATORY was left when i edited it, OH WELL again and i am looking at you, Soother.
"..it's what got me in trouble when I was spying on my sister"
serves ya right! ; ) A+++
Liberals are sisyphean as well as sissy peons.
you can do better than that, i’m sending you back to your seat ; )
i paid zero attention to the zimmerman trial and i will now have to force myself to avoid info about what is being done in it’s aftermath, bc it will drive me insane. the handbasket is hurtling ever faster towards hell.
Don’t go bringing that New Jersey beer into our respectable thread.
ok, that’s better A+++
Since when are we respectable?
Sisyphean
Sisyphean is a very nasty disease but can be cured with tons of anti-biotics. It is not nearly as bad as owning a condo in Phoenix, both are easy to get but getting rid of the condo is next to impossible.
so is it back to the salt mines for you today? i am enjoying a pre-vacation day off today. Have to take the dogs to be boarded, am having lunch with my st james mom friends, to celebrate those of us with july birthdays.
nasty biz! A+++
Obamacare’s dreck we’re now seein’
Compliance with rules, sisyphean
Delays, changes, waivers
Supporters get favors
That don’t accrue to the plebeian
Little known is that Soccer began with the ancient Greeks — originally it was called Sisyphus-ball
Some might describe the languishing, seemingly unending nature of the game as Sisyphean ...
It just moved on to greener pastures ; )
