Dallas ISD police chief says district won’t participate in Texas’ new ‘marshal’ law

Dallas ISD Police Chief Craig Miller reiterated Thursday that he is not a fan of a new law that allows for designated armed employees, or “marshals,” in Texas schools and said that his district will not participate in the optional program.

“I question giving a teacher a couple weeks’ training with a gun and saying go out there and do the job” that is extremely challenging even for highly trained veteran officers, Miller said. He was the keynote speaker at the monthly North Texas Crime Commission breakfast at Prestonwood Country Club in Far North Dallas.

Early indications are that several other North Texas school districts intend to follow DISD’s lead. Officials with Highland Park, Lewisville, McKinney, Duncanville, Grand Prairie and Rockwall school districts all said Thursday that they have no plans to join the program.

“I don’t think it is appropriate to have armed teachers on campus, particularly in urban districts,” Miller said at the time. “It’s a full-time job to be an officer.”

With due respect, sir it's been successfully defending the American homes of those little trained in the use arms since 1776. There's no reason it can't do the same for our schools.

From my WWII basic infantry training I recall one session of approximately 1/2 hour where the use of the service pistol was mentioned. No hands on training for the lowest and no hands on through gearing up for the invasion of Japan.

Clearly for the purpose of accustoming school children to accepting authoritarianism.

We should never have allowed it.
