I wish. Summing it up for my family of three, our insurance, including a lousy dental plan, a lousy vision plan, (nothing like what you get with Medicare,) and an additional plan with Colonial to cover lost wages, the bill comes to $9206.40, and that is only 40 percent of the cost. The employer pays an additional 60 percent that is deducted in the form of lower wages. But that isn’t all. Medicare takes out an additional $640.38 per year and the employer pays the same, coming out of wages. We also have $30 dollar copay, and a $300 dollar copay for labs, not to mention other things we still have to pay. I’d say you are doing pretty good.
Glad you mentioned that your employer pays most of the freight; most folks have no appreciation of that little detail (or of the fact that it is to large degree reflected in lower wages.)
I’m self-employed with two college-age dependents. A $10,000 deductible policy costs me around $12k/year. This is the sort of insurance that I hope I never get a reimbursement from because it would mean that either one of us got cancer or had a serious car wreck. Until I get to the $10k deductible, my co-pay is 100%.
I look forward to paying $1200/yr or so for Medicare in a few years, assuming it lasts that long.
I would run, not walk, to pay that rate. I was in that deep by April 1. I'm in for over twice that now, and nobody has even had thier checkups yet.
