I read several reports that said that during the Katrina rescue operation it was common for people to insist on taking their pets with them in the lifeboats that came for them and that many refused to get in without the pets.It was said (by rescuers,IIRC) that many people couldn't be rescued because pets took up the room that people could have used.
Stupid ain't the word for that...or this.

If you don’t care enough to save your pets lives then you shouldn’t have pets.
People grabbing the bag with their passports and laptops seem a perfectly normal reaction.
I know the fire say “leave everything” but most people are going to grab irreplaceable stuff on the way.
Stupid ain’t the word for those ridiculing the passengers or flood victims;but super judgmental and inflated sense of importance might be a start.
