It seems in the early part of the 1900's, a lot of German type people came here and opened family amusement parks,

Not the screaming monster roller coasters ... but the milder caterpillers and ferris wheel types.

In the Boston area was Norumbega Park .. I think they were Norwegian.

Those were gentler and happy times in America.

Also - this needs to be repeated (and good taste on the part of the Travel Channel):

The anniversary arrived about the same time the Travel Channel named the park No. 2 in its Top 10 amusement parks across the country, topping such heavies as Walt Disney World, Six Flags and Hershey Park.

Knoebels certainly has screaming coasters, with 2 of the top ranked wooden coasters in the country. They used to have the best kiddie coaster called the High Speed Thrill Coaster, but they had to put it down. Even big time coaster enthusiasts loved the High Speed Thrill Coaster because it lifted you out of your seat constantly. It was a great ride.

There's one here in Toronto, located on Centre Island. Admission is free, but it's a $7, 10-minute ferry trip from downtown. Best deal around for an all-day escape from the city. My parents took me there a couple of times a month every summer when I was a kid.
