Some of the best lamb I’ve ever had was in England, out in the countryside. Great lamb, Yorkshire pudding, and all that good stuff. Other than that, the only other good meals I’ve had in England were at Chinese and Indian restaurants.
You have to be careful about what you order. My wife told me not order American-style food expecting it to taste like American food. Order what the locals are famous for. In this case, the fish and chips, pasties, and shepherds pie. I did have an excellent steak at a place in Inverness called The Mustard Seed in 2006. I assume the place is still there. I'll always remember the very young and pretty Polish waitress who served our party. She said she was very homesick for Poland, but Britain was where the jobs were. Lots of Poles in Britain working in low-wage jobs. I hope things are improving in Poland.
By the way, Britain has the same sort of problem with illegal workers as we do. On our way to Scotland from England, we passed a farm field with a lot of people pulling things out of the ground. My English bro-in-law said probably every person we saw in the field doing the grunt work was either an illegal, from eastern Europe, or both.
