But isn't that what filled many churches with homosexual pedophiles?

You seem to be rather short sighted and making unmerited assumptions. The mercy in mind here is not the sloppy, excusing kind. It is the focused kind that sees past the sinner’s sin to the sinner’s needy soul and shows him a path that will bring about a conquest of the sin.
