Banff Motorcyclist Pursued by ‘Massive’ Grey Wolf Along Stretch of B.C. Highway, Takes Pictures
National Post ^ | Tristin Hopper

Last Saturday, Banff mechanic Tim Bartlett was christening a new motorcycle through the Rocky Mountains when he had a rare wildlife encounter that was equal parts terrifying and enchanting. On a stretch of British Columbia’s Highway 93, a massive grey wolf emerged from the trees, lunged at his speeding ride and chased after him at full speed as he pulled away.

The story would have become little more than another legend clanging around the roadhouses of Western Canada if Mr. Bartlett had not whipped a camera out of his top pocket to record the event for posterity; capturing a series of rare snapshots that have since been beamed around the world. The Post’s Tristin Hopper reached him by phone on Friday morning.

How did this happen?

I was about 320 [kilometers] into a 400 k trip … and was doing about 90km/h in the right hand lane going north and [the wolf] came from the left hand side of the road. It darted out, crossed the other lane and I had to swerve and accelerate to get around it. I went forward about 100 meters and when I turned around it was just standing in the middle of the lane watching me.

How close did it get to you? It was coming at me. It probably got to within a couple meters, easy, maybe a meter. If I’d have slowed down I would have definitely hit it, so I just opened it up, got a bit of power and got around it. I’ve had dogs run out at me on bikes before and you sort of get a feel for the distance the speed you’re going, but it was pretty tight.

But after you’d gotten some distance between you, that’s when you pulled around for a closer look?

That’s not typical wolf behavior, I have a feeling it’s someone’s hybrid pet that got lost and is now roaming that part of the highway........

Are all those pics from the same website? If so, could you post it for me? I saw one quite a while back with similar pics but I couldn’t find it again.

We have a coyote den about a quarter mile from our house.

I used to hunt pheasant in the far N.W. corner of Kansas. On one hunt, a white coyote was spooked out of a plum thicket by one of my hunting buddies, running straight at me until he saw me and swerved off. Startled the hell out of me since I never saw it coming and probably it too since he never saw me until about the last 10 feet or so.

This one was about the size of a large German shepherd, which is consistant with others I've seen out there.........

As a side note, I spotted a large brown and black coyote a couple months ago in my subdivision here in S.E. Michigan. It was very healthy and a good looking animal

They are from my own site...

http://www.jeffhead.com/idwolves.htm

But if you Google “Wolf Hunt Kills in Idaho,” or something like it, then look at the images, you will find a lot of them on various forums.

Thanks Jeff, will save it....

A couple weeks ago in the local paper here in S.E. Michigan, an enviro-waco pro-wolf activist from California wrote in complaining about about our recently approved wolf hunts in the upper peninsula.......typical BS

Yep...such an individual has probably never been out there and had to face a pack of these animals...or had either their own, or friends or relatives property destroyed by them.

And if they have, and continue with such ranting, then they are simply a part of the overall globalism/progressive/liberty-hating/un-constitutional problem.

God's speed and Bravo Zulu.

My Dad gave me a puppy when I was about 10 or 11 that he had gotten in Alaska on a business trip. They told my Dad that he was a Siberian husky, he looked exactly like this one running after the biker, not like any Siberian husky that I had seen in photos. He was over 100 pounds, never barked and hated to swim in the water.

That sounds about right. We also have fox here, which are about the size of a large cat, and absolutely beautiful.
