'Turn or Burn' might seem 'hurtful', but it will hurt a lot more not to turn and to spend an eternity in hell...
What were their specific apologies? If they want to apologize about their methods, then maybe they have a point. I understand that it is a 'rooters' article, so it might not be an accurate portrayal, but the article makes it sound like the Exodus Group focused on 'role playing', and never placarded the Gospel (the 'Good News' to save sinners) as the means of healing. If that's the case - sure, go ahead and apologize, you weren't doing it right.
The Lord Jesus Christ came to save sinners. We are all sinners and there is none that He cannot save. But we are not to remain in our sins (He did not condemn the woman caught in adultery, but as He said to her, 'Go and sin no more').
Repent ye therefore and be converted...
There needs to be some work lookig back at the homosexuals/lesbians relationships with their parents especially their fathers. The father is truly the head of the family. If there was a Christian approach of forgiveness for failings of the parents, I believe that this can be a way to reach these people.
It is about Christian healing which always involves forgiveness and asking God to forgive our resentments. This is a spiritual problem that has to be dealt with at the root of the problem.
