Observant Jew trying to keep Kosher, I presume?

An observant Jew cannot possibly keep Kosher at a fast food restaurant in the USA. The way this is done in NYC is you have stores that sell meat and stores that sell dairy. You just don't have a store in a predominantly Jewish area that sells both.

Friend of mine was a young lawyer fresh out of school and he got a job in the General Counsel's office in the Post Office Department's Cincinatti' regional office. He'd grown up in NYC, went to college there, and didn't travel much.

He said his first trip to a Kroger was like a trip to outerspace. He'd never seen milk and beef for sale in the same place in his life.
